UGVR项目是Stanford工学院和清华大学、北京大学、中国科学技术大学、台湾大学这四校联合的选拔优秀大三本科生,在大三大四之间暑假去Stanford在该校教授指导下进行十周的正规学术科研工作。UGVR项目往年参加者申请结果都非常出色,已经逐渐成为Stanford PhD的“学术保送夏令营”。而还有将近一个多月的时间UGVR项目2020年的教授名单就将发布。

Project 1: Nanomaterial Thin Films for Emerging Technologies - project will involve studies of the device performance and thermomechanical properties including adhesion and cohesive strength of new classes of hybrid organic-inorganic material films for projects that may include batteries, photovoltaics or other emerging device technologies.
Project 2: Barrier and Biomechanical Function of Human Skin and Relationship to Perception – project involves the effects of treatments and exposures to human skin, the diffusion of treatment and water molecules through the stratum corneum, along with resulting changes to biomechanical function and human perception.

My focus is on better understanding technology-based entrepreneurship using empirical, quantitative data. My lab group examines entrepreneurship in China and the US using modern “big data” methods of regression, natural language processing and machine learning. We examine the determinants of entrepreneurship, fundraising and performance at the policy, university, firm and individual levels. In recent projects we have used data from Alibaba, Tsinghua University alumni, Stanford University alumni, Welian, and Glassdoor.com

Our lab’s main goal is to generate better special effects for Hollywood films. Currently we are working on improving simulated cloth and face by learning from data. The student will be involved in building algorithms for detailed 3D reconstruction of garments, applying deep learning models to enhance simulation, and addressing challenges for practical applications such as virtual fitting. Most of the prior students in this program with our lab had good experience with us and are currently PhD students at top schools like Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, etc.

Research assistant in experimental nano-mechanics to develop stronger, tougher, lightweight and multifunctional materials. Preparation of metal, ceramic or composite nanostructures using chemical synthesis, lithographic techniques or additive manufacturing. Mechanical testing and analysis using techniques such as nanoindentation, and in-situ electron microscope uniaxial testing. The undergraduate research will work closely with a graduate student or postdoc in my group to perform structural and mechanical analysis.

The Smart Primer is an interactive, narrative-based tutor that combines some of the best features of both physical- and electronic-based learning methods. Our goal is to eventually build a smart and adaptive tablet-based system in which the story and tasks adapt to the user’s skill set and preferences.
 
Desired Skills & Background We would like students to have a strong technical background in computer science, have a good sense of design, and be passionate about building systems.
 
In particular, we would like students to be proficient in Android Programming (Java), Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, HTTP server, database, Linux, shell scripting, multi-thread programming, socket programming. Familiarity with cloud services such as AWS or Google Cloud would be a plus.

The UGVR student will work on a multi-interdisciplinary project to combiig synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and synthetic cell design. During the summer intern, the student will receive training from a senior grad student/postdoc mentor on molecular biology, CRISPR, and genetic circuit engineering. Then the student will apply these skills and creatively generate synthetic circuits to improve engineered cell function towards protein production/secretion. The student will also work at the interface between another electrical engineering lab to combine bioengineering with electronics. The expected outcome will be published results on a high-impact journal, which will ensure the students’ co-authorship on a paper.

The student should have a solid background in college-level biology, physics, chemistry, and decent knowledge in computer programming. A good understanding of bioengineering and synthetic biology is preferred. The student should have good communication skills in English, easy to work with, and remain motivated towards accomplishing the research goals.
 
We value lab expertise and skills including molecular cloning, bioinformatics, and protein engineering. Previous experience in a research laboratory or an independent research project will be a plus. No particular requirements for the majors, but a mix of related (see above project description) expertise and strong interest in research will be the basis of a successful summer internship.

Various hardware accelerators have been proposed to improve the throughout and energy efficiency of DNNs or image processing pipelines. However, given the fact that real world applications tend to involve both types of kernels, it becomes critical to jointly perform hardware implementations and optimizations for both DNNs and image processing kernels. The goal of this project is to develop a framework that can generate hardware mappings for hybrid pipelines from a Domain Specific Language Halide. UGVR Position Description (e.g. what is the type of project you have in mind for the student?) Collaborating with senior PhD students in the SVL Lab, the visiting student will work on computer vision and deep learning algorithms for task-oriented grasping.
 
The student will design a simple and general model for robotic grasp prediction in the 3D space. The model takes partially observed images and point clouds as input and predicts positions and orientations for the robot’s gripper to grasp the object. Both simulated and real-world robot experiments will be performed to collect data and train the model. Several potential research directions can be explored:
  1. Data-efficient reinforcement learning algorithms for grasping and manipulation with visual inputs.
  2. Feature representations for robotic grasping.
  3. Sim-to-real transfer learning for grasping and manipulation.

Bioengineering and Orthopaedic Surgery
UGVR Position Description (e.g. what is the type of project you have in mind for the student?) The main goal of our research group is to develop novel biomaterials and engineering tools to control stem cell biology, to promote tissue regeneration, or to eradicate cancer cells in vivo that cannot be removed using conventional therapies . Specifically, we develop biomaterials as 3D artificial cell niche to either promote stem cell differentiation, or to provide 3D disease models (i.e. brain cancer) as more physiologically relevant models for uncovering how cancer progress and for drug screening. In particular, we work extensively with injectable 3D matrices due to their ease for cell encapsulation, minimally invasive delivery for in vivo applications, and ability to fill defects of any shape in situ.  We also develop various in situ drug delivery systems that allows tunable release of growth factors or drugs in situ. The student will work directly with Prof. Yang and a senior member of the Yang lab (e.g. a postdoctoral fellow or a senior Ph.D. student) on a project that is at the interface of biomaterials, cell biology, and tissue engineering. Our group is highly interdisciplinary, and the student will get valuable opportunity to interact with postdocs, Ph.D. students and other undergraduates from a diverse background.
